Kaulana has worked with Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander organizations for more than 16 years, with a focus on strategy, culture, economic development, journalism and media. With more than 11 years experience working in the ANA Pacific Region, Kaulana helps ANA grant applicants and awardees to develop and sustain community-based projects. Kaulana is Native Hawaiian. He holds an MBA and a BA in Journalism and comes from Makawao, Maui. Today, he lives in Wahiawā with his wife, Kelsey.

The NIH Build UP Trust Challenge will award as many as ten Finalists up to $45,000 each and the opportunity to win one of four $200,000 prizes for promising strategies that increase research participation and the adoption of medical care by building trust and improving engagement with historically underserved communities.
